This poem was named after international youth led festival and movement Re.peat (link to Peat | RE-PEAT ) that aims to raise awareness of the significance of peat and restoration of peatlands.
Did you know that the Broads were created by digging for peat? Barton Broad plays a really significant role in the Broads heritage – it was traces of peat found on the south end of the Broad that gave clues that they were man made. Learn more here. Story of a broad (broads-authority.gov.uk)
Peat is vital for carbon capture and sustains a range of biodiversity. Learn more about how to go peat free at home here. How to go peat free at home | The Wildlife Trusts
Re.Peat
If the earth could dream, it would be you.
Bursting joy,
magical with wild midsummer nights,
star-lit love, phosphorescent, fairy flights.
Marsh-gas, heat-less fire and shimmering light,
shining star-like, to the moon.
Scent smouldering
into Puck and strange hues.
Sphagnum bog moss, dwarf shrubs, too,
skies bright with Golden Plover and Curlew.
With you, we flourish. But take too much,
too much, burns too soon.
Peth. Pet. Pete. Peyth. Peta
a dream of life restored
the wild in us all,
in you.
