(Archived) 6. Ben the Badger – by Leah Chaplin (aged 7)

This is Ben, he eats worms, and he eats lizards, frogs, rodents, birds, insects, bulbs, seeds and berries.

He loves juicy worms the most! He lives in a den on the edge of a big forest where it’s peaceful.

He sleeps during the day and comes out at night to hunt for food. It’s the middle of September, and he enjoys snacking on a few berries. He finds a nice juicy worm, and eats it all up!

Now he hears the birds singing and it’s 9 o’clock in the morning already! He said, “I am going to be late for bedtime.” He quickly gets to his den and has a good nights sleep.

When Ben wakes up, he goes to find some berries but they’ve all gone. So he decided to look somewhere else. As he was walking along he saw some blackberries across the road and he walked across the road to the other side. The road was quiet. He started to eat the most delicious blackberries he had ever tasted. He spent so long eating them, that soon it was 9 o’clock in the morning. He tried to get across the road, but he got hit by a car. He couldn’t walk and stayed still, and was in pain. Somebody stopped their car. It was a kind couple. They called the Wildlife Rescue Service, who came as fast as they could.

Ben was carefully moved into the Rescue van and seen by a vet. He had broken his back two legs. Ben eventually recovered and was able to walk again.

Badgers are hard to spot because they only come out at night and are black and white.

Please look out for badgers because you never know when you might see one.

Ben eventually found his den, got married and had five baby cubs. They all look like Ben and his wife.
